I was involved the original design of these in the 1990's. Our production cost was over $50 a unit and the output was not even 1/4 of these. One shakes a powerful magnet, passing thru a copper coil which generates an electric current. The electricity is stored in a capacitor which, in turn, discharges into a very powerful LED. Hence, no batteries and no bulbs to worry about. 30 seconds of shaking can result in about 5 minutes of powerful light. These are perfect for your car glove box or emergency preparedness.
